Basketball Team USA Wins Sixth Gold Medal at Rio

Many countries have a sport that personifies the people and in the USA, it is basketball. When you think about basketball, you think about the USA. Women basketball team USA beat Spain 101-72 to win the sixth straight gold medal in Rio setting a record of eight overall wins from 10 Olympic women’s basketball games that the US has attended.

The USA women team won its first seven games averaging 38.4 points. France presented the greatest threat but suffered a 19-point loss against team USA. One of the most exceptional performances of team USA was against Senegal where they won 121-56.

At the finals, Spain was leading in the first quarter and trailed by 3 points after the second quarter, but team USA closed the first half on a 22-8 run to lead by 49-32 points. With 90 seconds remaining in the third quarter, USA opened up 30 points lead while approaching their 100 points achievement in eight games. The team has not lost since the 1992 Olympic semifinals.

It is arguably the most dominant team in the Olympics games over the last quarter of a century winning 49 straight victories and six consecutive gold medals. In US women’s basketball, three players, Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, and Tamika Catchings, have now won four gold medals consecutively, joining their teammates Teresa Edwards and Lisa Leslie, who have also won four gold medals (Edwards also has bronze). In other categories of sports, there are only five female athletes who have won four titles in the same event.

The team showcased great unity and experience they have gathered from WNBA. They also attributed their success to the talent, skills, and the pressure they were facing from the coach, themselves, and fellow Americans. They had to struggle to set the bar high and considered themselves underdogs in every game to keep up their winning spirit.
