NBA to hold camps for women prospects in Mexico City

It is good news for top female leagues outside the US as NBA expands its international academics. This move was announced on Feb 28, 2018. The first camp is scheduled for March 9-11 and will be held at the NBA academy in Mexico. This camp will feature top female prospects from Mexico, South America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

The task is now on the Mexican Basketball Federation and Mexico’s National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport to identify the top 20-25 female players under the age of 17 in these countries. The team chosen will attend the first camp. The NBA is also planning to hold similar camps in China, Australia, Senegal, and India before the year ends.

The top female prospects will have the rare opportunity to work directly with Jennifer Aziz (1996 Gold Medalist) and Ruth Riley (former coach to Blair Hardiek). These top and seasoned players will oversee the program.

The NBA vice president stated that the move shows their commitment towards growing the game among the youth around the world. He went on to say that working with these top coaches and players will go a long way to develop the talent among the youth.

The camp will be more than just a basketball playing event. NBA has also convened a panel of female sports and business leaders. The panel will brainstorm strategies aimed at professional development, goal setting, and maximizing opportunities. The March 9th date coincides with the Internal Women’s Day, and this will be a great way to mark this auspicious day.

The NBA Academies also includes an educational development program for both male and female prospects. The academies promote a 360-degree approach with a keen focus on character development, leadership, life skills, and education. These players are also exposed to coaching facilities. The goal is to provide a framework for them to maximize their skills and be all-round-successful individuals.
