Athletic Scholarships

Athletic Scholarships

A lot of people think that higher education in the United States is very expensive. This is simply not true. A lot of scholarships are available to students on Federal and State level. Individual schools provide scholarships as well. Scholarships can be based on need, merit, field of study and many other criteria. There are countless websites outlining available scholarships and ways to apply for them.

Athletic scholarships are awarded on the merit of being able to play in a college sport team. Athletic scholarships are very popular in the United States, while being virtually non-existent in other countries.

In the United States most athletic scholarships are regulated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Association consists of three divisions: Division I, Division II and Division III. Only schools that belong to Divisions I and II can offer athletic scholarships.  Currently there are more than 460,000 students in the U.S. receiving athletic scholarships each single year. These students compete in 23 different sports.

It is a coach at a college who grants scholarships to students. All the information about scholarships for different sports in different colleges is readily available to the public. You can see whether a college offers scholarships, for what sports it offers scholarships, how many students are in a roster in different sports, and what the average scholarship amount is.

For example, Auburn University, located in Auburn, Alabama, belongs to NCAA Division I. Its average athletic scholarship in the school year 2013/2014 was $26,569 for men and $19,816 for women.

California State University – Los Angeles belongs to NCAA Division II. The scholarships offered by this school in 2013/2014 averaged $3,670 for men and $5,298 for women.

Barry University in Miami Florida offered scholarships in 2013/2014 school year that averaged $16, 125 for men and $15,709 for women.
