NCAA Hits Syracuse Basketball Coach With Nine-Game Suspension

On Friday the coach of Syracuse University basketball team was suspended by the NCAA after a lengthy investigation the school’s athletic program were carried out. The suspension will see the coach miss nine Atlantic Conference games that Syracuse basketball team will be playing.

According to the NCAA committee on Infractions there were 10 violations committed by Syracuse in a period of 8 years dating back to 2001 which were discovered and self reported by Syracuse University. The violations which primarily involved the University’s men’s basketball team also touched on the University’s football team.

The infractions which were conducted by the university included extra benefits, failure to follow drug policies which have been put in place by the University, academic misconduct as well as impermissible booster activity.

In a statement issued out by the committee, the university failed to monitor its athletic programs.
"Over the course of a decade, Syracuse University did not control and monitor its athletics programs and its head men's basketball coach failed to monitor his program."

The suspension that was handed out to the team’s basketball coach, Boeheim, will see him miss the first nine games of the ACC games of the 2015, 2016 season.

The penalties which were handed out by the National Collegiate Athletic Association include a five year’ probation, a reduction of three men’s basketball scholarships per year from 2018 to 2019 and in addition to that the University received financial penalties as well.
The University is also expected to vacate wins which they managed to get by fielding in ineligible students in its men’s basketball team who played in 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2010-11 and 2011-12 as well as wins in which ineligible students played for the University’s football team in 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07.
