What is Water polo

Water polo is a water sport that was created in the late 19th century. It is a team sport, where two opposite teams are trying to score more goals by throwing the ball into the opposite’s goal. The team with more goals wins. This game consists of 4 periods (each period last from 6 to 8 minutes, depending on the level of play), or quarters, 6 field players and 1 goalkeeper per team. All of them are in the water. Every team must have substitute players, usually 6 (one goalkeeper is included) of them. This sport is played in pools, usually 1.8 meters deep. Because players must swim during the whole match, it is very hard, and they need a lot of endurance and stamina. Swimming uses many of your muscles, so this is the reason why all water polo players have developed muscles.

There are a lot of minor and exclusion fouls during matches. For exclusion fouls, player is suspended from the game for 20 seconds. Equipment used in water polo includes: colorful caps, goals (that float or can be connected to the side of the pool) and a water polo ball (that floats on water). A water polo is all about swimming. Players must catch, throw and shoot a ball with just one hand, which is very hard! All 6 players play offensive and defensive roles, except the goalkeeper, that cannot leave his goal!

The water polo originated in Scotland, as a water rugby. Today, it is popular all over the world, especially in the United States of America, Canada, Australia and China. The water polo has nicknames: Wopo and Polo.
